The Women National Committee was created by an act from the Prime Minister (No. 97) in August 1996, and considered as technical committee affiliated with the Ministeries' Council.

Due to the committment of the Government to highlight the different women problems and to define its importance in all life aspects, the committee was restructured and its framework was broadened according to the Prime Minister act (No. 68) in 2000 by establishing the Supreme Council for Women Affairs headed by the Prime Minister. The Women National Committee became part of the restructued Supreme Council.

A female chairperson was appointed by a presidential decree leads the Women National Committee (WNC).

The Women National Committee is the technical committee of the Supreme Council for Women Affairs, and it is responsible for managing the daily activities and practicing a number of tasks and responsibleties.

The organizational structure of the Women National Committee consists of:
- The Committee chairperson.
- The Vice Chairperson, is appointed by a decree of the Prime Minister.
- The heads and staff of the specialized technical departments.
- The Heads of Women Departments in the Ministries, Political Parties and selected non government organizations.
- The Coordinators in the governorates.

Proposes policies, strategies, plans, and programs related to women affairs.

Reviewes the proposals of the annual budgets and final accounts.

Reviewes regularly the status of the executive body and provide suggestions to enhance and develop the performance.

Provides the needed suggestions to enhance the work of the Council and secretariat-general.

Carries out any other task assigned by the Supreme Council.

Implements programs for the policies, strategies.

Coordinates with national, governmental and non-governmental bodies and the related regional and international organizations.

Prepares the necessary proposals to modify the legislations, policies and participates in drafting the legislations.

Contracts and agrees bids to implement all the work requeired for the Committee.

Follows up and evaluates the performance standard of women legislation and laws in the different national bodies and provides related reports to the Supreme Council.

Dessiminates the women legislations and rights amongst women, raises awareness and coordiantes with relevant bodies.

Carries out studies, researches, surveys and statistics related to women issues.

Conducts conferences, seminars, and workshops related to women issues.

Produces different publications related to women problems.

Receives assistances and donations.
The Women National Committee includes in its membership all the directors of women departments in the ministries and governmental institutes and one representative of the following sides:
The National Women Committee has branches in all the governorates of the Republic, and each branch has a female coordinator selected by the governorate itself.
